Mikumi National Park
Overview
Mikumi National Park is one of Tanzania’s most accessible and wildlife-rich safari destinations, located in the southern safari circuit near Morogoro. As part of the greater Selous–Nyerere ecosystem, the park offers excellent game viewing in open landscapes that closely resemble the Serengeti plains, making it ideal for both short visits and extended safaris.
Description
The heart of Mikumi National Park is the expansive Mkata Floodplain, a vast open savannah that attracts large numbers of wildlife throughout the year. Visitors can expect to see elephants, giraffes, zebras, wildebeest, buffaloes, and antelopes grazing across the plains, while predators such as lions, leopards, hyenas, and wild dogs roam the area. The park is also one of the best places in Tanzania to observe large herds of buffalo and the impressive eland antelope.
Mikumi is renowned for its diverse habitats, which include open grasslands, acacia woodlands, riverine forests, and seasonal wetlands. This variety supports over 400 bird species, making the park an excellent destination for birdwatching enthusiasts. The Uluguru Mountains provide a stunning backdrop, adding scenic beauty to the safari experience.
